BMW Z2: gets the green light for 2012
Jalopnik source
According to German auto tabloid Autobild, BMW's given the green light to the long-brewing BMW Z2, a roadster based on the 1-series and even more compact than the Z4. Innovation through segmentation! The latest dubiously necessary vehicle from BMW will take advantage of the BMW Project i platform, which denotes "innovative, intelligent, and inspired," it also means using the rear wheel drive 1-series platform to build a compact coupe and convertible around 2,200 lbs. Rumor has it the car will be available with a range of motivational units, including a gas engine, a hybrid drive and an all-electric system. We do know BMW has been putting cash into electrification technology, but we'd be surprised to see it debut in an entry level model first. Expect to see a concept version of the Z2 at the Frankfurt Motor Show and production targeted for 2012.

The rear looks pretty hot on that illustration, the front end...not so much...

Is the supposed to be the Mini-Z?
Z Jr.? Z-lite? Either they are insane and will end up canabalizing most of their more profitable roadster sales, or they're crazy as a fox and think that they can use a car like this to recruit lots of new BMW enthusiasts who wouldn't otherwise buy a BMW (and will move up to the bigger ticket toys as they grow up). The problem with that approach is that this a roadster, not a practical hatchback or something that most people who can't afford a BMW would be looking to buy. How many Miata sales are there to steal? 2200 lbs? Sure, and be sure to give it an N54 too.

Sorry - didn't even know there was a Z2 forum. Never go to the E89 forum.
