Cougar Ace capsizes with 4703 Mazdas onboard

http://www.wired.com/science/discove...?currentPage=1

This is an interesting story, mainly about the recovery teams efforts after the fact. The first thing I noticed was how much the name Cougar Ace looks like Courage.
I haven't read the whole thing yet. It's ten pages long, but what I've read so far is very interesting. I did skip to page ten and read about the disposition of the 4703 Mazdas, though. They shredded all of them!

The first time I ever knew that the 1 series even existed, much less was coming to the US, was in a wired.com article back in September, I think. This was very soon after I had just passed on the 3 series because it was just a little too big. I'd seen an older model next to a new one in a parking lot and the new one seemed a lot bigger. When I saw the wired.com article, I thought, "Hey, this is me!" A few days later I was signed up!

Nice.
I tried to find the Wired article on the the 135i that you mentioned, no luck.
Found this instead:

Long, mildy interesting. BUT, it lead to this:

And the youtube clip is some of the craziest video I have EVER seen. Psychotic piece of driving. It's easy to watch it abstractly and not be affected, but when you start paying attention to the red lights he's running, it's absoutely harrowing.

Nice use of the word 'disposition', by the way. 8)

Ah - you found Rendezvous! That used to be the right of passage for car guys - back before we had this inter-tube stuff - you actually had to get a film copy of the thing to watch it (16mm or Super 8). Dam - every time I mention this kinda stuff I get older. ; -)

[hijack]Check the Wiki on the film: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C'%C3%A9tait_un_rendez-vous

Then there's this intriguing way to watch it: http://bhendrix.com/wall/Gmaps_GVide...endezvous.html

Then there's this 'speed' map of the trip: http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2005/Rendezvous.shtml

Edge, you brought up a whole bunch of old memories, thanks!![/hijack]

As I recall, the gist of the article was that the 1 series was also being released as a convertible in the US, as if everyone already knew that the 1 coupe was coming. I found this, but it is dated at the end of Sept and I put down my deposit on Sept 15th, so I don't know. I also don't remember going to blog.wired.com. The link on my desktop goes to wired.com, so it must have been there too. I don't know.

That Youtube video is amazing. Red lights must not mean the same thing over there as they do here?

The wikipedia and the speed map links are great. Answered most of my questions. Couldn't get the Googlemap to work yet.
When I watched the video earlier, I happened to have had my headphones on and turned up loud, as I had been listening to some music before. That worked out great. I'm going to play it again !

On that topic, I watched both Sorcerer and LeMans last night. Bought them off Amazon for about $6 each last week and they both arrived yesterday. The wife and the little guy went to bed and I watched movies until 3:00am...
More on that later...have to attack the "honey-do" list. 8)
