The one on my phone in the MyBmw app works fine. As I approach the car it unlocks the doors, etc.

But I wanted to test out the wallet/physical digital key card so I walked up to the car (without my phone on ME) and I took the physical key card out of my wallet and out of its plastic sheath and held it up to the door handle and nothing happened. I tried this a few times and it clearly wasn't working.

I called the genius line and no one seemed to know what to do. Finally one of the geniuses said to sit in the car with the engine on, be sure to have both physical key fobs in the car with me and place the physical wallet key in the charging tray and that there should be a pop-up then that would allow me to pair this with my MyBmw app digital key. Well, I tried this and the only pop-up I got was a notice that to use the wireless charging tray I needed to remove the card/NFC from the tray.

Any thoughts or help? I suspect there's a way do this without spending half a day at the dealership.

Did your dealer send a genius to your residence to learn the car and go through all of this?
Mine did and set it all up. Unfortunately it was kinda overwhelming and I forgot exactly how to do the key.

I spent about half an hour with a genius at the dealership when I picked up the car and, like you said, there was so much that he covered that I probably took in only about a third of what was covered. He set up the digital key in my phone but I'm thinking that he may have overlooked activating the wallet digital key.

You need to go into your key menu and activate the key card with both key fobs in the vehicle. Then you lock and unlock the door by holding the key card up to the ridges on the door handle.

I tried this. Here's a screenshot of the page in the manual that addresses this. However, when I place the key card in the charging tray no pop-up menu appears other than one that tells to remove the NFC card from the tray to use wireless charging. And this is with both physical keyfobs in the car.
I have a service appt scheduled for Wednesday. I'm sure they'll sort things out but I'd really like to better understand what happened and learn why I was unable to resolve this myself by following the steps outlined in the vehicle's manual.
