1 of the 4 units was down, and 2 others claimed to be up but wouldn’t work when tried, so I got the full benefit of a 350kw unit. Last edited by agorski; 02-06-2024 at 03:00 AM.. Reason: More info |

The charging process can be adapted to constraints such as the cost of electricity, available
current sources, or a low ambient temperature. The vehicle controls the charging process in such a way that the charging process is completed if possible at the departure time. A departure time must be set for this purpose. Whenever I have plugged into an EA fast charger a departure/charge time is shown on the dash. The car is definitely charging at a rate to get me to 80% withing the 30 minute free charging window. The finish time and charging rate fluctuates to ensure I am at 80% within the 30 minutes. I am sure this is built in to the plug and charge system. I feel like my wife is charging my car, she knows...she always knows

My car displays a departure time after plugging into a DC charger. It is very strange. I will do the 30 to 90 charge on my way home tonight at a 350kw charger so we can put this to bed

For sure; it will display a departure time if you've set one (see the OP's set departure time in their photo which is for the following morning even though they're charging in the afternoon), but it's not applying this for DC charging. With all due respect, your theory just doesn't make sense for many reasons not the least of which is that sometimes the charging infrastructure just makes it impossible to hit the target in 30 minutes. And, many (most) countries do not get the 30 minute charging offer. So, there is really no way the car could "know" about this. Plug and charge just links the car and a charging contract together so it can communicate who you are to the charger without having to use an app, etc. I mean, if you happen to be at a fantastic DC charger in optimal conditions would the car reduce the power just so you hit your target right at 30 minutes? That wouldn't make sense either. It's just trying to get you charged as fast as possible based on various constraints. As I said, I almost never hit the target within 30 minutes. But, I am glad that you have been!

This is itching at me because I have always been charged to 80 from various start levels within 28 to 30 minutes. Only thing I can think of is the battery management keeping the kw as low as possible to reach target. I have seen it go from 75kw up to 150kw down to 60kw then back up to 80kw. When the charge finish time goes beyond the 30 minutes time frame it speeds up. When it gets to about 2 minutes early it slows down. I am hoping this is not the case because I would like to just charge and hit the road as quickly as possible. Tonight I am hopping I can finally scratch that itch

The car can’t know about the charging limit, but the My BMW app can. There is a 30 minute EA card in my phone wallet that activates the charger with no EA account. The app in the wallet sends the activation to the MyBMW app which communicates with the car.
It’s feasible that it tries to max at 30 minutes. The app talks to my car to send a destination, or start conditioning, etc |

And the verdict is...... 30% to 90% at a 350 KW fast charger took 28 minutes. Hit 190kw peak then dropped off more and more as I got closer to 90%. I can say with certainty that it was purely coincidental with the 30 minutes getting to my mark. 40% to 80% at a 150kw charger took 37 minutes. I did the unplug and restart session trick and all went smooth and no extra charges. So it is put to bed now LVBMW

I got the EA DC fast charge on Thursday just to try it out and confirm the charge without using an app would work. Started at around 38% and it got to about 72% limit in 15 minutes. That’s great..
