Won't happen for a number of reasons. Well the biggest issue is the iPhone is GSM vs Verizon/Sprint being CDMA. Verizon will want to load their own crappy OS onto the iPhone, etc. Apple did offer the iPhone to Verizon first and they declined. I wonder if they regret it now with the success/hype that has followed.

But Qualcomm makes money either way since the iPhone uses a lot of Qualcomm's patents. Somewhere around $40 of each iPhone sold are patent royalties back to several companies. In the future, phones will run on a generic O/S with google help. You will by a phone at the store, and then pick your interface and carrier. THe phone will evolve to have enough power to replace laptops. You will imply dock at work and have external keyboard, monitor, and mouse. Laptops are going away as chips get more powerful.

It's not a generic OS if it has Google help. Phones will be just like desktops, there will be multiple OS's to choose from. We've got OSX, WinMo, Symbian, Palm, Blackberry's OS and soon Android as well. I love the idea of an incredibly powerful handheld device, and it'll happen one day, but a luggable device will always outpower it. The question becomes if we'll reach a sort of plateau where you don't need any more processing power to use consumer applications. I doubt it. Computers today are unimaginably fast compared to 30 years ago, but the applications have become unimaginably more detailed, functional and resource intensive just as fast as the hardware.

You're actually better off signing up for AT&T service then canceling the plan. Then you get the phone for $199 or $299 and paying the termination fee. It ends up being cheaper to terminate lol. Be careful about how you terminate/switch plans though, you don't want to lose your number. So never just cancel a plan, always transfer to another.

In the future all computing power and applications will be hosted on backend servers all over the Internet. Thin clients will be in homes and mobile devices and they will be very powerful still.

Texting is very easy and quick. I like it all except that you have to look at the keyboard since you cannot 'feel out' the keys... oh well.

Does anyone know if you can take the SIM from a current ATT ( data plan n all) phone and use it on the Iphone? Through the Job i get almost a 30% discount on my monthly bill, but this discount is not applicable to iphone's. So maybe i can fool them into thinking i am using another phone by just moving my simm over? Or do they have a detection method?

199 for the 8gb 299 for the 16gb black/white this price is only for the phone. And if your going to get the phone with the plan, you will be forced to sign a 3 year contract as far as fido is concerned. In BC the plan rates start from 60/month, 75/month,100/month and 115/month The main difference of the plans, is the amount of data usage. Currently the highest plan which is the 115/month offers 2gb of data usage. Unlike in the states, its unlimited data plan. You also get to use the fido/rogers hotspots, which enables you to make free voice calls and send text over wifi. That is what I was told. However like I said these are from the fido side of things. I do not have any details about the rogers side, for I am fido subscriber. But I am guessing they are similar, for they are run by the same company. any how, you can read up on the plans here: http://www.fido.ca:80/web/Fido.porta...bleIPhonePlans

And yes, they do have a detection method. They call it you-wont-get-any-data-unless-you-switch-to-a-different-plan

That is Apple's standard return policy, but with AT&T if you're going to cancel your service it has to be within 30 days or you face a cancellation fee. Due to that and not getting the months payment for the plan you chose, they want the iPhone back so you don't turn around and unlock it.

The cloud can do a lot, but you're not going to be running full fledged apps on the internet anytime soon. You're going to upload your HD movies to a server then start encoding them on the server? Never. Same goes for Photoshop, you're not going to upload your RAWs to a server then edit them there. How about games? Thin clients can do a lot, but they will NEVER replace a regular computer.

So I agree that everything has its place in the eco system, there may be some blurring and overlap at the edges, but outright power users as you have said will always choose the real thing over the compromise...
