Woohooo! That is great news! I think it will be great PR for BMW to have a 50 mpg car. Not to mention the good that it will eventually do for our planet!!!!

There is a hole in the California Emmission regulation. You can bring any car with diesel fuel with about 8000 miles to california. Since no new car with diesel can come to california. You need to register to the california dmv as used car. It should be ok... Since California's Gas Station all have Diesel #2.

um... BMW has been making diesels for a long time. Most of the cars they sell in Europe are diesel. Diesel engines are much more thermally efficient that Gasoline ones due to the higher compression ratios (mainly) and are now as emissions friendly as gasoline.

No offence, but your comment is short-sighted. Obviously selling machines that consume less fuel and produce similar or fewer emissions is a good thing for the world. Its doing the world a much bigger favour than the hybrids that Toyota puts out.

I'd be very excited to see that 204hp four cylinder here in North America! It is for sure going into the 123d in Europe and the 323d... 204hp and something like 300ft-lbs of torque with a 2.0 liter level of fuel economy would be very nice!

The diesel engine produces a lot less CO2 than a petrol engine,produces nearly 1.5-twice as much torque as a petrol engine making it feel a lot livelier in the normal rev range, uses less fossill fuels and also runs well on bio fuel. Before the particulate traps being used for euro4 engines the particulates coming from a diesel exhaust were bigger than the particulates (pm10) from a petrol exhaust (pm5) and because they could be seen people automatically assumed that the exhaust was dirtier from a diesel whereas the smaller invisible particulates from a petrol exhaust are far more damaging to the lungs as they get past natures filters. Now that most diesels are fitted with particulate traps they are cleaner than petrol exhausts on the particulate front.

I consider the "planet" to include the biota. But yeah, hopefully the BMW engineers are working on ways to modify our star's transition to a red giant.

But who cares, Mizzou and Michigan started out the new year very nicely!

BMW diesel technology is great. The emissions on the new diesels with Urea injection are N2 and H20. I'm looking forward to test driving a diesel when they come stateside.

You missed my point. Regardless of any type of power a car will use for propulshion, no car is going to save the planet... It's a stupid concept.
