Also, people think differently... and the test taxes your brain in several ways. You could do really well in certain areas but horrible in others.

Give me logic, shapes and math any day...

Nope. It just means that you are too lazy and lack the patience to excel on the type of material being tested. Your are right, they are used as a screening tool and are not a true measure of intelligence. However, with these results, they can focus their efforts on those individuals that have innate interest to succeed in these subjects.

That problem was pretty cool, and though I think myself to be pretty intelligent, I didn't get it because I wasn't "Thinking outside of the box" enough. I tried all sorts of arithmetic progressions, symbol pattern progressions and even changing from base 10 to base 3 (modified as I didn't see any zeroes) thinking without coming up with it. That's a hard one. If you got it, you should be proud of yourself....

Psychometrics involves composite scoring in a number of areas. No single question or problem is going to say whether you are a genius or not, but one's composite score on some of these established tests (i.e. batteries of questions) is both reliable and reproducible. I saw a poll about occupations of posters on this site, and found a plethora of occupations which require a high degree of cognitive ability. If you earned the money to pay for your car, chances are, you are in a higher cognitive 'bracket'. If you parents paid for your car, you're still probably in a higher cognitive bracket, unless you were adopted or they did it after hitting the lottery.

BTW, I always thought that you could only get into Mensa via straight IQ tests and I was disappointed to find out that one can get into Mensa with relatively pedestrian SAT scores.

As posted previously, IQ is just one part of the equation. There's still, focus, motivation, perseverence, accumulated knowledge, and performance under pressure...perhaps it's the intellectual equivalent fo the maximum bench press or 40 time... that being said, everything is a bit easier with good cognitive ability. I agree with CnoteMD (are you fond of Benjamin Franklin in your wallet or a musical doctor?) except that I think that IQ tests are not necessarily designed to measure academic success (though it's no wonder that there's good correlation). I think they are designed purely to measure an elusive quality known as cognitive ability, or "G".

i thinks its cool how a lot of us tried so much more advanced methods to figure out the problem..(algorithms and logs and what not)...when all you had to was count out loud.

I am sure an apt computer programmer can write out a program that can solve this problem and give you the subsequent lines of numbers. Or maybe a mathematician can even write out a formula. Math is fun - somebody post a problem that actually uses math.

I don't know what the requirements are for Mensa membership, but I did take an IQ once in high school. It was for a "gifted class" that I didn't find out about until the end of 11th grade.

I remember that there were a lot of sequence type problems on this test. They would have series of numbers or even shapes, and you had to predict the next part of the sequence. I have always done well at those type of problems, but had more difficulty on verbal type questions (I had a similar problem with the SAT). Thankfully, my current occupation doesn't rely so heavily on verbal ability (I deal with abbreviations most of the time, anyway).

For e90rocks, my nickname has a few different meanings. I have always loved music, but didn't have the means to learn all of the instruments that I would have liked. So, I taught myself to play drums and percussion. This turned out to be more musical than I would have originally thought (I learned bass clef for tympani and treble clef for marimba and vibes). One of these days I want to learn piano and bass guitar (I tried guitar at one time, but my fingers were too big).

The $100 bill part came about from a joke someone told me when I decided to go into cardiology.
How do you hide a $100 bill from an orthopedic surgeon? You put it in the patient's chart.
How do you hide a $100 bill from a radiologist? Attach it to a patient.
How do you hide a $100 bill from a cardiologist? You can't!

...and after I read that post that joke was popular in its retelling in y office. That's pretty interesting (about your musical interests), and fits in well with my opinion that intelligence is a highly transferrable property. (I used to laugh when biographies on people would say "...then he changed his field altogether, and was a success again! What a rare person!" Yeah, well he's smart. There's a reason for successful polymaths....)

I don't know exactly what the membership requirements are for Mensa, as I didn't take the test (similar experience with school testing, though) but I read about it in The Know-it-all, a book by a guy who tried to get smarter by reading the entire Encyclopedia Britannica. I suspect Mensa to be primarily a self-affirmation club for people who didn't maximize their potential.
