Ultimate street drag racer up to about 100mph.

Just not a track car and can't repeatedly put out those performance numbers before the battery starts to overheat.

If given the option, I would be tempted. Just too expensive right now and the interior is still a little raw for its price range, but the touch screen is fantastic.

The company has an Apple cult like devotion and I expect they will be long term players. They already have been a disruptive force in the auto industry.

Doesn't compare at all to the M3 and they are built for 2 different purposes.
Straight line- Tesla
Corners- M3
Track- M3
Comfort and features- either, personal preference
Valet appeal- Depends on the area and Valet
Convenience- M3, not enough charge stations yet
Cost- M3

Bottom line is I would love to have both.

Lmao! I had an order for a 85d due in 2/15. They called me to tell me that the options and configuration would not be available and that I would need to reconfigure. Also was told the auto pilot would be released slowly through updates and not at the time of delivery.

I didn't want to take the chance of 110k on a car with an interior on par with a Taurus so I pulled my deposit, and in protest I bought an m3 and saved a boat load of cash. I'll be back once they are a little more settled in and after I see how their battery factory will effect prices and tech.

The 85D is an extremely impressive car. I had the chance to drive a P85 and that was quick, torque is instant. For a DD, I honestly can't think of a better car than this for the money (not that it is cheap). And the autopilot feature is incredible, way before its time. It literally can drive itself (although not recommended per Tesla haha). I can't decide whether I want an i3 or a Model S 60 for my new DD really comes down to cost.

270 Miles... More than I would ever need as a daily driver. I have other cars I can use for extended road trips.

I understand that not everyone has multiple cars to choose from for different duties, but then again they probably aren't the target market that Tesla are going for with a $110,000 - 120,000 car.

I like that companies like Tesla are trying to innovate, but I think companies like BMW and Chevy have a much better approach to the electric car:
Hybrid cars with gasoline and electric motors.

These cars are still saving the environment from a lot of CO2 emissions but with a lot more practicality in terms of driving range, cost, and refueling times.

Pure electric cars require a different mindset and approach to travel. People hate change.
Tesla talked about the battery swap program, i imagine once they get it streamlined nation-wide it could be faster than charging for road trips.

Tesla's electric cars require a bigger wallet, and that's with the government subsidies.

It would be interesting to see a battery-swap program implemented. But even with that in consideration, I don't think Tesla is marketing itself to the right people.

270 mile range, $110k starting price, long recharge times...owning this kind of car is more of a political or fashion statement than anything else.

The BMW i3 and Chevy Volt are much more practical in all of those areas, and as a result, much more marketable to the average driver. I think as time goes on, these dual-motor cars will see much greater success then Tesla's electric-only approach.

The Volt is much more practical. The i3 all electric is a joke with only 81 mile range. The Rex version isn't anymore impressive with 150 mile range. 2014 i3's are collecting dust on dealer lots. With the i3, you still need a second car. The Volt can be an owners only car, electric city car and then it can also be driven across the country. Depending on pricing, the second generation Volt could be a hit. I expect sales to jump, first gen Volt was already the best selling plug-in.
