Shitty dealership made shitty mistake but are legally obliged to carry through with its consequences. The fact that they are arguing over $4k is laughable considering the shame this will bring them.

Untrue. In NY, only one person needs to be aware that the conversation is being recorded. It gets really iffy once you start calling across state lines though.
