So just took delivery of my 550e, popped the trunk open and holy crap, BMW decided to just throw a spare tire back (no run flat tires for me) there completely nullifying the little trunk space we already have with this hybrid. Anyone find a trunk shelf of some sort to address this? Might just have to go spareless....

On other ICE models, a spare tire can be found under the trunk floor if you optioned it that way. Yours is just "thrown in"? We need pictures!

My understanding is that is under the floor also and doesn’t limit cargo volume. Clearly more I’ll check for tmrw morning. Adds to my list 😁

already removed it. I'll put it back in tomorrow. It's secured down with some harness straps, but truth be told very disappointed how they addressed this storage. I removed the trunk floor panel, and it's just the car battery and other control modules there now. I had a 2022 530e and yes, there was storage under the trunk panel, not in this case. I'm assuming with the bigger engine and battery packs, this space has been sacrificed

I mean sure other 5’s have not had spare tires, like my two F10’s. The battery and some electricals are under the trunk floor.

But just a spare tire rolling around in the back? Did you request a spare tire in your build? I’m wondering if you requested one, and this is the only way to provide it.

The 550e comes w/ the spare vs the inflation option. It is supposed to be under the floor vs just sitting in the trunk.

Can we get picture of the spare and attachment system?

Assuming it’s even possible to rearrange the underfloor and either put a micro spare ahead of the battery, or move the battery to the traditional right side fender cubby to make space for a spare, maybe the wheel doesn’t fit. Would your wheel even fit there?

I believe the 550e HV battery is two pieces along the sides, not sure how much if any is under that square white area.

On my 540iX, I had ordered the spare tire ($150) So it came with a Styrofoam trunk insert that raised the floor level to be even with the trunk opening. it has a lid with the same carpeting as the trunk. It had the spare tire, jack and tools, and 2 storage compartments. If you lift the insert, there is a 48VDC battery for the mild hybrid. The 12V Battery is under the hood on the right side right up against the firewall.

It seems to me like someone just grabbed an extra Spare tire and threw it in there for some reason. Maybe there is someone out there that ordered the spare tire and got the insert and tools, but they forgot to put the tire in there, Then they saw it laying around, and got rid of it before some inspector gigged them on it.

The trunk space in the 550e is exactly the same as the 520i so nothing to do with the hybrid. The 550e batteries are under the floor, not the trunk.

Out of interest, how much bigger was the trunk in your 2022 530e for comparison? The 550e trunk is pretty decent, not a little trunk space imo, so it is surprising that the old hybrid has a bigger trunk space given the increased body size and new battery placement in the G60 version.

I think the overall cubage of the trunk is bigger than the G30's (From comparing it side-by-side to a friend's G30) but it's less height, because of the battery under the trunk space, but is wider and longer. The spare tire does take up about 4" from the depth so it seems smaller. At least the ICE versions. I don't know about PHEV or BEV's. I think they are even smaller.

just from a pure subjective standpoint: width and depth feel about the same. On my 2022 530e, had run flats, so no spare was in the compartment under the trunk panel, and had some useful storage space this time. This go around on the 2025, just 2 small compartments on the side for storage, along the wheel wells.

Sorry everyone, at work all day today, I plan on swapping the reflectors this weekend, so I'll put the spare back in the trunk and take a pic if no one else has before then

It baffles me how my wife's 2024 x3 has to have an add-on space in the luggage compartment to accommodate a donut spare tire, while my 2003 530i had a full size spare under the trunk floor

Does anyone have a G60 with an underfloor spare?

Also I’m wondering if there are any differences in floor height between G60 variants. The way to check that would be for people with different models to measure the height from the carpetted floor to the top surface of the black plastic piece at the edge of the tailgate. Measure right on the centerline where the trunk lid latch hole is in order to have a standardized measure since that plastic piece doesn’t look flat left and right in the picture.

Picked up my 550e tonight and I have the same idiotic spare in the trunk. When I saw it I was going to cancel the deal. The GM came out to see this and was shocked as well. I have seen 530is 540ixs with a spare, and they have a real floor, albeit slightly raised. The staff was speculating that the reason the tire is not recessed is due to the hybrid battery. But isn't the battery located under the floor plan in front of the rear axle? Another conspiracy theory is it is due to the option 2VV (adjustable dampers and rear steering).

I ended up taking the car after they provided ended providing added cap cost reduction and benefits, plus they gave me a Mobility Kit. I plan to remove the spare, store it in the garage and just put it back when I return at lease end.
The dealership was great overall.

After a short 12 mile drive home, in both personal and sport modes, I realize it will take time to get used to this car. It is not much of a sport sedan, not very engaging to drive. It is basically a slightly smaller 7 series. Already miss my M550ix greatly.
