Electrical fire hazard stickers

So I noticed on the local news Fired Departments are starting to ask home owners of EV and PHEV's to place a electrical hazard sticker on or near the garage door of the home or apartment with a garage. This is to help responding fire departments be aware of the potential for thermal runaway vehicles in the garage and react accordingly. The news article also showed a device fire departments could start getting that allows them to control the vehicle by plugging something in the power socket of the car. As an example scenario, lets say the house is on fire but not in the garage where the EV is located. they could have time to remove the vehicle to avoid additional fire risks to them.

Anyone one else know of their local fire departments suggesting the electrical hazard stickers? I guess here you can contact the FD and they will give you the sticker for free. And what about that device that can control the vehicle? That kinda seems scary if in the wrong hands..

I have not seen it here in Washington, but it seems scary to me. My MAGA, Trump flag, red hat, Tesla driving next door neighbor would be the sort to turn in non-Tesla EV drivers. My son had to leave for a few days because this guy was insufferable, keeping that huge flag unfurled and blasting his shitty music. I live comfortably below my means here, but it’s time to move. I just don’t know what’s going to happen. Our governor is already developing plans to fight the national guard if they come in from neighboring states to deport all of our migrant workers.

hmm mkay good luck with that neighbor I guess. However I was not implying it was a requirement or law but rather more of the FD just asking citizens to help them out from a risk mitigation prospective when they are responding. So no turning in your neighbors yet. lol.

I’m pretty old and Jewish. I would go to work with my grandfather and see his coworkers with concentration camp tattoos. I don’t think the government would come after EV owners, but having a sticker notifying local rednecks that you drive one isn’t a great idea.

EV adoption rate in my City is very high, as well as around the Bay Area. The City pushes hard on electrification and encourages EV adoption, and there has been nothing like you describe about notifying the FD about EVs.

My move from the SF Bay Area back to Ohio has been an interesting one. A guy in my neighborhood has a large "F*** Joe Biden" flag draped across the back wall in his garage. I was surprised to see a person 4-5 houses up come home with a G60 540 in Storm Trooper white this past summer. German cars appear to be in the minority here! Well, cars in general. Lots n lots n lots of pickup trucks.

You need to come down to the Columbus area. BMW financial is here, Two BMW dealers and I heard if you work for BMWFin you can get a super special deal on leases and then those end up on the two dealer's used CPO lot. You probably would be surprised by the amount of Bimmers on the road around here.

Canton and Akron area... defiantly not so much. There is a reason I called Akron Crackron when I went to college at UofA years ago. I could feel the brain cells draining from me each day. It was one of the best days of my life graduating to get the F out of there.

I think your local “rednecks” can see you driving your EV and they don’t need to look at a sticker…

I’m not sure why but this sticker concept seems to have really upset you. I simply read this as a way to potentially keep your local volunteer fireman safer if he was ever trying to save your ass from a fire while risking his own life..

Except EVs have a way lower risk of fire than a gasoline vehicle. It is 60x fewer per 100,000 sold. There is a 2035 EV mandate in my state and the fire department isn’t worried. They are equipping their vehicles to deal with thermal runaway if it happens.

And the rednecks in this area have no idea that the i5 is an EV. Everyone in my cul de sac was surprised when they saw me plug it in. That’s one reason why I chose this car. It doesn’t scream ‘I’m electric’.

Hehe, it wasn't much first choice when I moved back, but my niece and her son live here, near Massillon and she wanted me closer. Ohio State and Columbus have changed a lot since I was a student, but was looking forward to experiencing the vibe again.

So just want to make sure all on same page - I have an EV so this isn’t a debate pro or against EV.

But I honestly think you are missing the “why” - it has nothing to do with which causes / is in involved in more fires. The desire for the sticker is bc if there is a fire involving an EV, that fire is substantially different than a normal fire that the FD is accustomed to putting out.

That’s great your state is preparing all trucks for it - I think that actually validates the other FD’s desire for home owners to have that sticker since their state isn’t doing that..

EOD - I totally get you don’t want to scream EV and have a sticker on your house. But good news - no one is gonna force you. And I’m with you. I probably wouldn’t do it either bc I don’t like to scream anything outside where I live. But, you don’t have to attack your neighbors and call them all insults like rednecks

I’m glad we all have the choice to decide.

I agree, but redneck isn’t really an insult. I’m not sure how else to describe this guy. He ripped out all of his grass and put in cheap artificial grass. It is not the kind that looks real, it looks like a mini-golf type of turf. He chopped down a nice maple tree in his front yard and left a stump. He “planted” plastic blue flowers in the garden. Yes, we have an HOA but they did nothing. Now he has the giant Trump flag outside that’s says Take America Back. Redneck is the best term I could come up with.

As for the sticker, I’m just against labeling people and things. I keep seeing people wearing a big Star of David in Germany before the camps opened. The fire department could easily just keep a list of addresses in their computer.

If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck… 🦆 Hehe, I’d call that “redneck” too.

Where I am there are not many I5s on the road, at least that I have seen. We have special plates that would identify it as an EV but I chose to keep my veteran plate instead. Hard to tell without the EV plate and most folks are surprised when they ask and I tell them it is all electric.

That is also one of the main reasons I picked a BMW i5 - it doesn't scream that it's an all-electric car.

Although the i5 sharing the same platform with the ICE models brings some disadvantages (like a transmission tunnel in the back seat), one of the ADVANTAGES is that it looks like a "normal" ICE car.

I like the way a reviewer recently put it when talking about the i7, "The i7 is a BMW first, then an electric vehicle." I think the same thing applies to the i5.

I also appreciate that the i5 doesn’t look like a pinchy-faced spaceship that pushes the tired cliche that electric vehicles are so futuristic, they must be “from the future”, so they have to look like alien ships from bad sci-fi TV, with barely visible headlight slits that the begs the so unhip question: is less really more? Or just less?

That said, the i7 DOES have a fairly pinchy Rolls-Royce from the future look since that’s pretty much what it is.

Let’s see, in Florida in the 1960’s, my parents couldn’t join a country club because they were Jewish. I was held out of assemblies in school because I was Jewish. The blacks had it worse. Now, people want to return to those days?

Let me guess. You are a white, straight, male Protestant.
