How soon they forget. This was not a "bunch of Americans", it was a bunch of Americans, Brits, and Canadians ... with a significant number of Australians, Kiwis, Free French, and expat soldiers from Poland, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

While the American contributions was massive, it's also a typically American approach to forget that D-Day was only successful because of what the Brits did at Sword and Gold beaches and what the Canadians did at Juno beach (not to mention what was learned by the earlier Canadian invasion at Dieppe and the successful landings at Anzio by the British, Canadian, and American forces).

Fair point, I'll edit my original post but yes most of us are aware that soldiers from other countries participated.

Thank you. I think my blood was already a little roiled on this issue when I read this CNN gem D-Day: Debunking the myths of the Normandy landingsthat doesn't mention anyone but the US and Britain. All of the Allied soldiers went through hell in the invasion of Europe, whether it was the Americans in the Ardennes or the Canadians at the Falaise Gap.

We also remember that, we had a hands off approach until the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor.

In my experience, a lot of Americans really do forget the major role France played during the Revolutionary War, without their help (especially their bankroll) who knows how the war would've turned out. I think my favorite thing about that was pretty much the level of effort the French were willing to dole out just to essentially troll the Brits.

I think we also all forget that the role of the Soviet Union (both in 1939 and one Hitler broke the Non-Aggression Pact). Victory in the west would never have been possible without what the Russians did in the East.

Instead it became another US bashing thread. Kind of common. Ah well. I know the US is the root of all evil and all that.

Kind of related, you people (yes, I went there) might want to remember that 'Americans' can indeed refer to the Canucks and Mexican citizens as well, since they are both part of the continent of North America. Kind of like Europeans includes French, Germans, etc... In fact, Americans can include a bunch of countries from South America, as well.

.....And don't forget the help the Russians provided in helping the Germans slaughter millions of innocent civilians. And......don't forget it was the Americans who provided most of the logistical aid to all these soldiers (including the Russians). We know that it was all hands on deck against the Nazis, but don't belittle the American effort.

Hardly US bashing. I suggest you actually read the thread. No one discounted the American contribution to D-Day at all. It was simply pointed out that the OP singled out the US for something that many nations deserve credit for. It is worth nothing that he kindly edited his post in response.

And "Americans" in this context does not refer to Canadians or Mexicans.

On D-Day, the Allies landed around 156,000 troops in Normandy. The American forces landed numbered 73,000: 23,250 on Utah Beach, 34,250 on Omaha Beach, and 15,500 airborne troops. In the British and Canadian sector, 83,115 troops were landed (61,715 of them British): 24,970 on Gold Beach, 21,400 on Juno Beach, 28,845 on Sword Beach, and 7900 airborne troops.

I won't post how many lost their lives that day. RIP.
