Driving Assistant Professional Highway assistant

I took the longest drive so far with highway assistant engaged with a few high way exchanges and moderate traffic in some areas and with speed limits of 55 and 65 mph with cruse set as high as 75. I did not have to put my hands on the wheel the entire trip on the highway of 27 miles.

That’s impressive. I’ve driven those highways quite a few times and usually middle of the day with heavy traffic. Even then it can be a challenge. Did it ever give you an uneasy feeling that it was in control?

I use mine almost daily. I love it. I’ve got almost 12,000 miles now. It’s such a stress reliever. I use it a lot in traffic mainly. I’m so glad everyone in the group suggested that I get that option because I’m very glad I did. I had auto pilot in my previous Tesla and never used it but this one is so much smoother.

Yah I was pretty nervous the whole time and often had my hands hovering the wheel ready to grab it and foot near peddle. Other times during the trip I did manage to put my hands on my knees and take my foot away from peddle but only when there was less traffic around me. It's definitely not a natural feeling and nor should it be imo. IMO once you think you can relax and trust it it's when it can go horribly wrong for you.

I’ve done 21k miles in my X5 M60i with the highway assist feature and never has it misfired. We do manyroad trips and it’s a game changer. There is a learning curve and one eventually learns to trust it. You will too.

That's great, and in hindsight I wish my i5 had this feature, even though I only drive on highways a few times a month.

I guess I need to start trusting my car more to start using this feature. I tried a few times and I was not relaxed at all with it. Once it also got deactivated which is odd since I was having my hands close to the steering wheel probably it was not seeing my eyes looking at the road anymore, I don't know what to say.

Did it just drive from A to B based on your navigation destination?

yes once I was on the highway about a mile from starting point. The whole time on the highway about 27 miles worth including a couple highway exchanges it was all hands off wheel.

So, it can exit the highway and run on other roads just based on the navigation, do traffic stops at traffic lights, etc. just based on the destination you set up on the navigation?

It only was hands free on the highway. it did take me into the exit lane but then notified me to grab the wheel once that exit lane started to split away from the highway. I had to look at the side mirror to change lanes.

It’s always an adjustment when you’re used to the driver aids in your BMW then get into another car (rental or whatever) that doesn’t have them. Hopefully you don’t hit something without the warnings you’re used to. After driving a rental Nissan for a week last month I was more than happy to get home to my 5er.

Works only on limited access highways such as interstates/freeways.
