Hyundai Will Sell Cars on Amazon: What You Need to Know
On November 16th, Amazon and Hyundai announced the details of a wide-ranging partnership. One big component of this tie-up: Hyundai will be the first automotive brand to sell vehicles on Amazon starting in 2024.
Hyundai is the first brand to sign up for this with Amazon. But we expect more will sign up. And it could end up being quite popular.
We've seen an explosion in popularity of buying used cars sight unseen with websites like Bring a Trailer. Buyers should theoretically feel more at ease buying a new car online than a used car. Some buyers will still want to see/test drive a new vehicle in person. But others should enjoy the reprieve from dealing with pushy sales associates.

If a traditional scum car dealer is in the transaction because of state dealer laws, no.

this is wild, they are taking over. I personally probably would not. I guess its one of those things though you could go drive some locally. Figure out what you want and order through Amazon if there's perks or benefits.

This was my very first thought. This may be an “announcement”, but I predict implementation will not be smooth, because the dealers will pitch a huge fit and dealership sales laws are strong and pervasive. One thing that comes to my mind right off the top of my head is if I were a dealer I would immediately say I will not provide any services at all to cars sold this way.

No. Direct car sales remain illegal in several states. Hyundai is selling this as "another way for dealers to build awareness of their selection and offer convenience to their customers." And you will still need to arrange vehicle pickup or delivery with the local dealer.

In theory yes. But that assumes I've driven the car and that no dealer is involved at all. I bought my Model 3 online, but I had already owned one previously and knew exactly what I wanted. Then just showed up at Tesla service center to pick it up. Best buying experience ever.

I doubt that's what this Amazon thing will be tough. Sounds like just some marketing bs for dealers.

Seems too good to be true. Scum (dealers) are still involved. As long as dealer laws are on the books, scum will survive. Sadly for all.

Buying from Amazon Doesn't Support Small Business
1) At the height of the pandemic—most of 2020—Amazon thrived.
Our point is quite simple: when you buy from Amazon, you are not supporting small business which is key to a green economy.

3) If small businesses want this potential growth, however, they are forced to rely on Amazon, undermining their agency as an independent business. Last year, Amazon kicked a small business off its site and seized the inventory, but in November, the merchant won its legal battle, earning one of the biggest acknowledgements of Amazon’s mistreatment of small businesses.
4) Earlier this year, the House Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial and Administrative Law found Amazon “has monopoly power over many small- and medium-sized businesses.”
5) Amazon can use its monopolistic power and influence in numerous ways, from the aforementioned copycatting to fixing prices.
In May 2021, attorney general of Washington, D.C., Karl Racine, filed a lawsuit against Amazon for this exact practice.

Maybe it's neither?

For me 90% of dealer buying experiences are shit. I would rather not go through that. Pretty simple. I don't give a shit who profits. I don't even like Amazon on a personal level.

100% of consumer surveys on the subject report that consumers despise the car buying process. Despise might not be a strong enough word.

The world, outside of dealers, know this. The business world, outside of dealers and including Amazon, want to improve the car buying process. In so doing they will earn profits by attracting customers away from creepy, unethical clowns (dealers).

We can only hope that dealer laws are vacated through a process similar to the recent court decision related to another unethical crew in the economic world - real estate agents.

This is just dealers selling cars via a different channel. It's not a purchase direct from the manufacturer. I don't believe dealer laws have changed. Doesn't solve anything.
