Same thing happens to me when I precondition - I lose 2miles in range but no change in SOC. It’s why I stopped looking at the estimated range and started to focus on %SOC and efficiency (mi/kWh) to think about my range

I would be happy and pleased if it was 40F. It hasn’t been out of the teens for days here. Plus no snow, so just morning dew icing the roads.

I don't have a pic: -40 (apparent -40 F is the same as -40 C) and I have 117km @ 50% SoC.

It's been brutally cold here

Ha….OK, let me pull a slightly geek move here. We’ve got some real-world data to look at - taking the Range and %SOC we can work out what everyone’s implied 100% range would be. It’s also instructive to consider what local conditions exist by looking at each users location - some have noted specific temperatures. If you calculate it out, this is what we get - a range of temps reportedly spanning 80F and from 146 to 306miles. Hmmm, so what do we say the “Range” is for this vehicle?

On the second table I took the data from a neat model that ArenaEV built for the M60 based upon their testing that tries to describe range as a function first of temperature (I put in 60mph as constant speed) and then varied speed held at 40F. Again, the message is clear - range varies HUGELY as a function of speed and temperature. I don’t fully know the algorithm that they’ve used, but it does somewhat line up with the user data here.

As an aside, the 40F/60mph is pretty close to my experience which suggests that this model isn’t crazy. My January data, I’m averaging 3.3mi/kWh - with 81.2kWh usable battery capacity that gives me a range of 268miles. Importantly power consumption and distance are measured values, which is why I’ve started focus more on %SOC and power consumption rate as the things I track now.

Edit: adding in link to ArenaEV model https://www.arenaev.com/bmw_i5_m60_r...-news-2927.php

My plan

I am leasing and wont hesitate to charge 100% as often as I need . I do not plan on buying this at lease end, so not worried about what effect it will have on the battery. I have had 3 consecutive Tesla Model S and the colder it is the worse it would get. Very hard to project what actual range would be. Speed and aggressive driving absolutely affected the range, and was made much worse when it was cold. Also I preconditioned as often as I could. However the Model S I have now had a 402 mile range when new. It's a '21 and after almost 3 years my 100% state of charge is about 370. I rarely charge to 100% though as I don't need to. I hope it doesn't become a problem. In NYC/Long Island 0 to little Charge America stations to use. None in Brooklyn where I live. Will rely on mostly home charging.

What was the charge when you last parked ? Compared to the am. Also do you have any preconditioning programmed for the morning?

It seems no one is considering the ‘Maximum Range’ feature in this car. Gives you an extra 70-80 miles of range.

I still don’t really know how that works, but I assume that the additional range would scale as a factor of temperature. It’d be great if there was a way to know how many kWh was somehow on reserve?

I did a charge at work today and when I was at 82% SOC my app told me I had 246mi range - which equates to the magic 300miles of total range. It was 56F when I took the reading, although colder when I was driving.

I updated the table with that data and spatel19’s update and also put in calculated efficiency if the implied range at 100% was accurate given that the usable battery is 81.2kWh. That shows some of the issues with the range algorithm to me - I *never* average 3.7mi/kWh, but am routinely seeing 3.3 on my dash and the myBMW app which equates to the 272mi range - that feels credible as battery size, miles and kWh are all measured things.

Edit: apologies for the threadjack, OP! I’ll stop here.

Apologies if this isn't the right place to add this :
Since I haven't had my vehicle delivered yet....

In my 21' Tesla Model S when the vehicle is at 100% charge regeneration is automatically turned off. The regen barely adds any noticeable range anyway. This also happens when the battery is cold, with regen being non-functional as well until it is warmed up. Even with pre-conditioning.

Tesla sometime in '21 disabled the ability to manually turn off regen. It is probably my biggest gripe with it. My son or anyone in the rear seat constantly complains of feeling nauseous it city driving. The Tesla fanboys when asked blame the driver, me , lol ,for not knowing how to adapt my driving. It's ridiculous to not be able to manually shut it off. Apparently it was to get the Model S over the magical number of 400 miles of range. Which it only saw for about a year.
Can you manually turn off the regen or adjust how much it causes the pull back effect when you let up on the throttle.

Does it automatically go into this mode when the battery gets to a certain low SOC the add range ?
