Got a new X5 as a rental car the other day and it has the same gear selector. It’s fine and takes no effort to get used to. Even in a high performance car, with paddles why would you ever use a stick in the middle while driving? It’s actually nice as it frees up space and removes a superfluous item from the cabin.
