BMW knows its target market for the 5er. And for most of those buyers this is satisfactory at worst and a sweet spot in the range at best. But it’s been a moving target over the decades.

I’m old enough to remember the e39 and how great that car was in M5 form. We also had an e34 before it in our family - drove that car home after earning my learners permit at 15 y.o. - classic BMW. We had the e60 as well in 550i form and the F10 after it. I haven’t driven the new 5er, but it seems so modern relative to the G30 that I test drove. The F10 and G30 were relatively boring cars other than the M5 variants. My impression of this new 5er is it has some of the optional amenities of the X5.

The other options are the e class, Audi a6/7, Volvo s90 and Genesis g80. I’d probably go with the e class just for the optional air suspension and RWS. If I’m going for modern luxury might as well go to extremes. The audi a8 and s8 is heavily discounted these days- $15k promo discount, think it’s nation-wide, so that’s a consideration as well. Although it’s not because I don’t want a car like this when the comparable SUV’s are better and more practical.
