yep, it's just white noise. Same reason why most young tots love riding in cars. I've been told that the background noise and gentle swaying motion reminds them of being in the womb.
Remember to not leave the hair dryer running while you leave the room. You don't need a fire in your kid's room while you aren't there. I just bought a white noise cd that I loaded on the ipod and set to play in a continual loop for our daughter. Worked great. A humidifier also works well.
