Use shorter focal lengths with smaller apertures and longer exposures to get star effects. The light diffracts as it passes through the small aperture, creating the lines. How many lines you will get will depend on how many blades in your aperture diaphragm.
I think this right, but I'm not 100% sure...
6 blade - 6 lines
7 blade - 14 lines
8 blade - 8 lines
9 blades - 18 lines
The odd number of blades doubles the amount of lines. I also believe that the effect is reduced at longer focal lengths....
