AHAH!... An honest poster!
Y'know when I read the OP's desciption of the event, it reminded me of that occasional driver that does indeed leave too much space between his car and the car in front of him. We've all seen those types. Now, the OP describes that there was only two car lengths between himself and the car in front... but if traffic wasn't moving, there's really no reason to leave a bunch of space there, anyway, as it is a sure bet to piss off other drivers.
Further, when the traffic started to move, the OP posted that he waited a few seconds to start to move. Whoa! A few seconds will create an even bigger gap! No doubt, at this point, he's got so much space that the guy behind him is totally pissed off and decides to race around the OP to fill the gap, and not be stuck behind a guy that simply won't keep up with traffic in a timely manner for his own personal self-centered reasons.
I make no excuse for road rage, but drivers that won't keep up with the flow of traffic are usually self-centered control freaks, and use traffic as a mechanism to be in control of others. I've seen drivers in the left lane going slower than drivers in the right lanes, and they make no attempt to move over and let other "faster" drivers go by. They end up with a loooong string of cars behind them because they think that they have the right to decide for everyone how fast they should go.
On the other hand, I have passed cars on occassion with a couple of women that are yakking away completely oblivious to the rest of the world... talk about being self-centered!
Sometimes it's intentionally selfish, and sometimes it's just self-centered stupidity.
