All joking aside, it is definitely a welcomed feature. My only concern as a IT security professional is that I can pick up someones phone, and as long as they are looking at it (distance TBD), it will unlock.

Did you actually take time to understand what happened? The issue was caused by some idiot (who definitely got fired) who didn't do their job. They forgot that just like TouchID, that a passcode is required 1 time on first boot to enable TouchID. That iPhone was restarted and FaceID was never enabled. Said so right on the phone.
Stupid mistake, but it was a mistake by a person...not a problem with the technology.
I just confirmed this with my iPad Pro...TouchID doesn't work on a fresh restart.
