To them it's worth the risk of being found out, they do not care and look away when called on it. I.E. If they just stop looking at the truth (a true Fan Boy/Girl calling them out on their Fake Badges and Such) they will disappear and the lie will maintain credibility amongst the rest of the world.
Regardless of non-car people not knowing cars, I think many know a BMW is special (read premium brand), and the liar can butter themselves up to them about the ///M being even more special.

I think it's the same attitude behind buying any fake luxury item (like a fake LV handbag): they want one, want to be seen with one, but can't or won't pay for it.
Although, I've never seen Porsche owners doing this crap. Putting a Turbo badge on a non Turbo car.
