In the market for a new mattress
In the market for a new mattress. Went to my local mattress store today and was interested in a few Stearns and Foster. The only downside is they cost $2000-$4000 for a queen size and is quite soft. I use to have a Temper Pedic but did not like it and ended up selling it.
Any suggestions for new mattress? I don't see price as a problem as long it is comfortable and durable.

I love my temper pedic. In comparison, my old beautyrest felt as though I was sleeping on tree logs

+10000
I learned that the hard way. Now my mattress looks like it has one of those air bubbles pizzas do. My Tempur-Pedic pillow most definitely helped, though.

Which one do you have? A Tempur is going to be my next mattress for sure.

I don't know which model it is, but it's a Cal king size that we got at closeout since the new model was coming in. Paid like 3k for it, got 1100 for my old beautyrest which went bad under warranty (spring failed), and the original price of the TP was like 6k.
So, I got a new mattress, got all my money back on my old one that went bad after 5 years or so, and got the TP at closeout price. So, i think I got a STEAL on the TP :) at a final price of about 2k :)
I'll check to see if the mattress has a model on it tomorrow. I do know that it's the firmest one in the model lineup

Everyone is different, so taking other people's opinions could cause you to buy the wrong mattress for your body. I have a Kingsdown Rhapsody pillowtop that I spent $500 on (it was actually $1000 because of the box spring, but I didnt need it so I convinced them to only sell me the mattress), and its the most comfortable mattress for ME. Everyone is different though, so find out which is best for you.

I bought a latex foam matress (can't remember the brand right now...Sealy maybe) and have been super happy with it. It doesn't conform to your body like memory foam does, but it also doesn't have any springs or frame so nothing to poke you. It was about $3000, and if I had it to do over, I would have bought the same matress without the pillow top.

Xinfinity billion. I just bought a new queen size Simmons forever rest or whatever the fuck last week - extra firm, $399 delivered and my old one taken away...if the mattress salesman tries to fuck with you just walk the fuck out, trust me they aren't selling shit

I would hit up Costco for a good deal, assuming you are a member of course.

I tried Costco...better deals to be had a dedicated mattress stores. FWIW I went to Costco, American Mattress (had a deal in place), Bedding Experts (very unpleasant experiences with employees at 2 separate locations), and Back to Bed where I ended up securing a better deal than American. Costco was most expensive out of the three, and I'd avoid Bedding Experts based on my experiences with their salespersons

It's true... everyone is different, so don't buy one sight unseen. As creepy as it is to have that old dude in the cheap suit and handle bar mustache watch you lay on a bed, you should lay on a few at the mattress store to see which ones you like.
My wife and I have had our Tempurpedic (Celebrity is the model we have) for about 3 years now and consistently can't wait to get home from vacations/visiting relatives, etc. to sleep in our own bed because we love our mattress so much.
I'm a long time lower back-ache sufferer and for me, there is NO substitute.

My parents have Temper Pedic's in every room in there house and I hate them. Pillow tops blow as well. I'm rocking a $500 Sally Sleeper, or something like that. It's hard as a rock and I love it.

When are they NOT going to to try and fuck with you? They are worse than car salespeople.

The guy I dealt with at Back to Bed didn't fuck around for one minute - I walked in and was straight, saying I have this deal in place down the street unless you can beat it, and he did, done and done in 15min.

fyi: all big mattress retailers have exact mattresses but their labels will differ from place to place and that's how they sell you on best price around. it's because they're the only retailer to carry that label. an example is macys and a mattress discounters
the best mattress i've ever laid on is some beautyrest one where it's part memory foam on top and springs on the bottom, i think about 2k for a queen. remember mattresses are a very personal choice so take it w a grain of salt
and if you guys are in oc, ca and need a retailer, my friend owns a place. just pm for the details

Everybody is correct. Just about all the major mattress stores carry the same exact brands and just slap different names on the mattress so you cant cross shop.
Mattress salesman are much worse than car salesman. I've bought 2 mattresses in the last 3 years. One for college and another one for grad school. I bought a ~1k pillow top for $400 delivered. I saw a hooked up g35 out front and just went in and started talking to the guy about it. Laid on a bunch of mattresses and kept bullshitting with him. Told him I'm a student and I'm pretty broke, showed him my car, etc. and he immediately knocked off $500. Told him no box spring and he knocked off another $100.
Its all BS and they're all ridiculously over priced. I've got an awesome foam top spring bottom mattress now that I picked up delivered for $350. Dude tried to sell it to me for $800 when I walked in the door. There is much more than "wiggle room" when it comes to mattresses.
|
^^ True about the wiggle room...list price on the set I got for $400 was over $800...I mean half off wtf kind of profit margins are these people working with?

Latex is the way to go IMO. Latex is more expensive in many cases, but it lasts twice as long as more traditional memory foam mattresses do, and stay cooler in the summer.

I've had a Sleep Number bed for nearly 10 years now, and I love it. The wife can set her side as hard/soft as she wants, and I can customize my side. If/when this one finally craps out, we'll buy another one for sure. But I don't think that will happen for another 5 to 10 years (honestly.)
